CAPACITOR ON INDUCTION MOTOR TERMINALS BASICS AND TUTORIALS

Capacitors frequently are installed across the terminals of induction motors and switched with the motor.

The amount of kvar so connected should be limited to values that do not cause excessive voltage at the motor due to self-excitation when the breaker is opened.

Table 5 gives the maximum recommended capacitor kvar for direct connection to the terminals of induction motors taken from the 1947 National Electrical Code.
